To blog or not to blog?

I had a thought this morning, when I realised some of my innermost thoughts are floating in cyberspace, and it made me think twice about blogging: what on earth am I blogging for? I know what my friends and family would think if I even started discussing blogs, or debating things that people write in them. Already, someone dear to me advised me not to read such stuff. I mean look at the word blog. It sounds like dog! And what is the point really? Shouldn't I be out there in the real world, mixing with real people, rather than tap my cute little fingers on a heartless keyboard? Isn't an hour spent cruising the blogworld better spent cruising the real world?

I know what is good and bad for me, even though I may not always practise the right choices in real life. I am now trying to make a choice of whether I should pull out of this blogworld or stay put. On the one hand, I know there is something wrong about it if it's so taboo to my friends - we love debating but I'll sound like a moron if I "cite one of my sources" as being a dude in the blogscene! On the other hand, there is obviously something, a "control" factor, in writing whatever you want for complete strangers to read; and sometimes comments can be fulfilling because they show that some anonymous soul out there shares what you're thinking.

Not only does blogging improve my english and grammer (:P) but I find I'm also using dictionary.com much more, which can only be a good thing. But hey, the only words I can immediately recall learning are: "shard"; "salacious" and "polyamorous"! And would I dare use these in my daily vocabulary in my social group? I don't think so. In fact, perhaps it would have been better if I hadn't known the last two words existed at all. Then, I think...isn't there a lot on the blogworld I should really not have known?

Knowledge is power, they say. Does being exposed to the blogworld really enrich my life? Or should I exercise my brain in more useful ways, like read up on macroeconomics and biochemistry? The Internet has made information so easily available, that it is hard to differentiate between the definitely not shit, the not-so-shit, and the definite shit. Most bloggers would argue there is real value to blogging. Some of the more "serious" bloggers such as samuraisam and secretdubai write about stuff that make you "think" - their blogs are also of "use", in that they have influenced those they directly/indirectly want to influence. But then again, don't other bloggers make one "think" too, even if they don't appear as wanting to change the world? And what makes them appear less "serious" than others? I suppose it's just the language used, and consistency in theme. So it seems both serious and unserious blogs have equal significance.

Where is this whole argument leading to? And where do I stand now? Well, I know one thing all anonymous bloggers share is our "underground voice". All of us want to say something and most don't want to say it out loud, because of society, and what everyone supposedly "thinks" we shouldn't say. This is a paradox because if we think things "underground", aren't we thinking them in reality? Well, I am going to continue blogging: after all, what's the harm in thinking out loud?

There are many benefits to blogging. And disadvantages as well I guess. You've mentioned some of each.
I cruise the internet a lot and learn a lot from it, sometimes you cruise the real world for hours without learning much. I learn from other people's experiences, thoughts and ideas.
I learn not to judge people because when they "unmask" themselves, we get to see that there's much more to them than meets the eye.
If I were to judge you by peopleandcake, I'd come out with very bad judgement. But I've also read some of the comments you've left on my blog which showed more than what meets the eye.

"Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth." Oscar Wilde

I don't mind citing a source to be a blog, in fact I do it often !
It's the new world isn't it?

And maybe with time you'll get to write what you deem to be more inspiring and thought-provoking.

Good luck!

I'm a new reader to your blog and so far I've enjoyed reading your posts in your various blogs.
Personally I love writing and all and I love live debates n all but I never considered blogging. True when hanging with friends and discussing things you wouldnt use very sophisticated words :p and it's NORMAL.

Keep blogging, enlightening us and expressing yourself in your own space.

You're a writer, and blogs are as good as anywhere to flex the writing muscle until a better idea comes along. Stick with it!

*travelling stranger It's interesting that you point out "you cruise the real world for hours without learning much". Forgive me for being blunt, but I think this is the "easy way out". I think the real world is where the real action lies, though blogs have now being become part of the "new world", as you say. I guess it complements real life, and it's a great medium to explore others' views. What we can read in blogs in one day beats the collective opinions we can gather in one day of real life interactions. Thanks for sharing the quote from O. Wilde!

*uae_rebel my response to you is, in your own words, "if you are waiting for me to drop my mask and reveal some sort of void beneath, eternity will not do that for you lol I love your blog, copying your words from time to time saves me from explaining myself lol

*shlemazl I guess blogging is like a lover. You never know when the expiry date comes.

*clayfuture LOOOL!! remember I'm a female, so my conclusion will either never come, or will appear after an eternity of discussion!

*dxb_chica It's really lovely of you to write such sweet things, I appreciate your kind words. Thank you for your appreciation. You seem to express yourself so nicely, consider starting a blog! It would be nice, keep me informed if you decide to write! It's loads of fun, and your language improves too lol ;) See you around chica ^_^

*flic Yeah I'm going to keep at it. Thanks a lot for dropping by!

*immotion Hey blogpal, we share the same first two letters in our nicknames ;) Pop culture? Interesting analogy... cool I'll keep at it! Thanks for your opinion.

*drama_div@ I will try and follow my heart. Thanks lol

*paraglider I"m really flattered you consider me a writer, esp. when it's coming from a true writer! I like reading your blog, it kind of takes me to outer space when it's actually a real life paranormal place you're writing about heheh. Honoured to see my link on your blog! See you around - but not at the Paranormal Hotel ;) !
