By the book - *tagged*
I've just been tagged by the wonderful seabee to do some kind of a book review without actually having to do any work, as I understand.
The nearest book to me was either at my bedside, or on the bookshelf, both of which are equidistant to my current location (thank goodness I don't, as yet, own a cookbook). So I decided to do the tag-thing for 2 books, not one...and here goes (am I the last to respond to seabee's tag? Was stuck in traffic, alas!)
Here goes, in no particular order:
1. Pick up the nearest book (of at least 123 pages):
'The Civlisation of Rome' - Donald R. Dudley
2. Open the book to page 123:
Yup
3. Find the fifth sentence.
Almost, but not quite; the native tradition of realistic portraiture survived, and the funeral monuments of the late Republic show us the Roman face in uncompromising, sometimes alarming, realism.
4. Post the next three sentences.
In this respect Greek artists working in Rome had to come to terms with Roman taste. Otherwise, the vogue was for all things Greek, as it has been at times in England for all things Italian. Greek sculpture, acquired by loot or purchase, adorned the public squares and temples and the great villas.

Next book:
'Everything Bad Is Good For You' - Steven Johnson
2. Open the book to page 123:
Done
3. Find the fifth sentence.
That probing is a powerful form of intellectual activity - you're learning the rules of a complex system without a guide, after all.
4. Post the next three sentences.
And it's all the more powerful for being fun. Then there is the matter of social connection. Net skeptics voiced a decade ago revolved around a withdrawal from public space: yes, the Internet might connect us to a new world of information, but it would come at a terrible social cost, by confining us in front of barren computer monitors, away from the vitality of genuine communities.
5. Tag five people.

The first one was by your bed, right? It's what helps you to get to sleep at night! LOL
oooo moi've been tagged eh? I am going to get my hands on Steven's 'Everything Bad Is Good For You' - and confuse the shite out of me, even more ha!
But seriously, think that book might be worth reading. Perhaps I can pick up a thing or two.
good lord Child! Wasnt the first one LIGHT enough???
Uff kids today I tell you. Such psudo intellectuals. In my day we only kept the *POND'S COLD CREAm on our side table.
(hahahahahah!!!)
(For all you young uns Pond's was on of those beauty creams like oil of Olay that women swore by as the secret to their glowing beauty......This was no doubt years before KY came on the scene)
*nzm, how did you guess incorrectly? ;-) The 2nd was, in fact, by my bedside! Just because it's by my bedside, or on my bookshelf, for that matter, doesn't mean that I'd read them! Nevertheless, I think both of the books would serve as an incentive to fall asleep...now that you put the idea into my head that books are meant to make one fall asleep, I might move my bookshelf closer to my bed...
*rosh - you've been tagged indeed! Excusez-moi - if I ever cause someone to buy a book, it would be a life accomplishment. I'm only on the first chapter of the book, having skipped the intro. The current pace is a page a day! lol Good for my standards, meaning I might actually finish the book, which would mean the first book I would have actually completed in many years...
*kaya...keep calling me 'child', I like it ;-)
Intellectual? haha. The books I own are for decoration. They look great on my bookshelf, and I replace the books on my bedside table according to my mood. I think the second book has stayed there longest, and I damn well ought to complete it, even if it takes a year.
Never tried ponds, but my grandmum has used Oil of Olay for decades...me, I just use any old moisturiser - I like the Clinique 3-step programme: I like the facial wash, toner and moisturiser. KY - no idea what u're talking bout, honay! ;-)
I once got into trouble for shoplifting a tub of Ponds - but that's another story!
*nzm ;-)
btw which one of you is German/German-speaking?
hmmm is this where you tagged me? it's weird coz my name doesn't appear, and I was already tagged many moons ago and filled it in :)
