THANKS!
Moaning, complaining, negativity - I'm staying away from it, while the majority indulge in it. Today, I focussed on the good things, however few of them there were to find in my daily routine in delightful Dubai.
It started off with the toll gate outside Mall of the Emirates. Is Salik going to be that bad? Will it mean there are less trucks doing 100kmh on the slow lane, flashing at me as I speed up to 105? I progress down the highway, admiring the Metro pillars going up on the side of Sheikh Zayed Road. Trying to locate the car service showroom behind the grand height of the pillars that slightly obscure my view, I pull into the slip road, nearly hitting a traffic cone. Whoops! Didn't see that one.
Car services are way boring. I love my car as a man would. Unfortunately, I'm neither a man, nor so well-informed as to the ins and outs of a car - its ingredients. When the car service ends, I ask him: "Did you check the tyres? Was the pressure OK? Did you change the oil?" "Yes, Madam," he says. "Everything is fine: if it wasn't, we would provide you with a report." "THANKS!" I say, leaving the showroom, wondering what on earth my car has had to endure in that one hour of man-made manicures.
Suddenly, I crave the company of Diet 7up. It's called 7up Free these days. Why would Diet 7up now remove the "Diet" and call itself "Free"? This cheapens the drink that I'm paying a whole Dhs. 1 for. Now I'm drinking a free drink which is still diet. Or at least I hope. And then I get back into my car, which I unlock (they say never to leave your car unattended at a petrol station these days!) and to my detriment, find a bozo has blocked my path. I am now more than desperate for my 7-Up Free and march back into the shop and ask every random guy if "that is your car". Eventually, I find the culprit, who marches back to his car and proceeds to move it with speed, the bimbo on the back seat bellowing into her mobile, probably at another bimbo. I get into my car, and a man walks over - I delay closing the door - and tells me I'm beautiful. "THANKS!" I say, and I drive off with speed.
Did I mention the frustrated git who tailgated me on the way to the petrol station, who was in more than a hurry, honking at me, yet refusing to stop tailgating me? Was he mad that he had just passed the Salik toll gate and couldn't get a sip of 7-up Free?

Changing times eh? I used to leave my car unlocked all the years I lived in the UAE. I do not believe there is another country (perhaps Oman/Qatar) which has similar safety/security as UAE.
Until I moved to North America, I had never heard of people stealing cars? I am still trying to get used to the fact that people steal cars?
*Guy, I can't watch youtube properly on my computer, unfortunately. Have tried various suggestions from samuraisam and nick about how to clear my cache but the vids r still slow. Will check this one out another time, thanks for the link!
You didn't really think I nearly hit a traffic cone, did you? It just sounded fun to write in the post. Well, I could have hit it but with my womanly powers in the driver's seat, missed it by inches =)
Btw why can't I access your blog?
*rosh - ppl have been warned not to leave cars unattended. I'd usually lock it only because I have some valuables in there, but you never know, really...there *have* been one or two cases in the media in the past about cars being stolen in this way. Remember the time we could leave the doors unlocked? Those were the times door-to-door salesmen didn't exist and there were only 2 brands of water ;)
i still leave my care unattended ...
but we should be more careful
whats up woth the seven up thing?
'I get into my car, and a man walks over - I delay closing the door - and tells me I'm beautiful. "THANKS!" I say, and I drive off with speed.'
That's it? You don't return the compliment? That's kinda rude, the least you could have done was ask for his cell # (to not call of course) but you know to boost his ego!
Hi... just wanted to say hello. I just discovered the UAE community blog today... so it was really cool to find an active blogging community in Dubai...Don't why I had not thought of checking before
Anyway nice blog!
Thank you for the post :-)
Who is this post secretly dedicated to then?
By the way, I dunno how long you been here, but ever since the 1980s, everything has gone up in price.. even petrol!
However, a 7-up is STILL 1 DHS.
WHY?
"However, a 7-up is STILL 1 DHS.
WHY? "
Shooo be quite BuJ - someone could read this and hike up the prices. Ob btw it's not just 7up. The shawarmas still cost 2 bucks - yoohooo!
oops keep it quite yall :)
*jawahir jewels = yeah, maybe Oman's more safe than UAE I guess, when it comes to leaving cars unlocked at petrol stations. One can never be too sure, I guess.
*mass = I don't know. It's my favourite drink after I ditched diet coke...! I thought it might be more healthy...
*j-t, as backward as you presume me to be, not only do I know what the done thing in other parts of the world would be, but I would, in an ideal world, very much welcome these "done things" right here. Unfortunately, since you clearly, and cutely, have little idea as to how things function here, there's no way in hell I could have even thrown that dude a decent glance; asking him for his #, or giving my # would have meant an invitation to following me for hours. I would have loved to boost his ego, but in public, well, that would have been a major catastrophe! Gosh, you are such a UAE virgin, if I may say so! And it's tres cute!
*Random, thx for the comment, and for passing by. Cute photo and cute cat! I know the feeling. I just discovered the UAE community blog, and blogging. Is that a good enough excuse for throwing out the BBQ? ;)
*Buj, confident enough of you to ask ;) Actually, your comment has made me start *trying* to think positive, only everytime I do, negative ... spurts to my mind. Like the last post, that was dedicated to you, I'll try and put "pen to paper" and try not to think of anything while writing, I guess that's the only way nice things will come out. =)
*paraglider, if you're reading this, I also remembered you told me once not to write only when I felt about complaining about something...so I'll try as well as I can, though you know, it can be difficult at times!
*Buj and *rosh = Price of soft drinks = I know about this dudes, old school dudes think alike. "why" I don't know. It's one of those things old-school dudes say to each other but don't know the answer to = that's coz there's no answer. But you know what? I'm going to find out some time soon :)
{{paraglider, if you're reading this, I also remembered you told me once not to write only when I felt about complaining about something..}}
Well, I might have made a subtle suggestion, but I'm sure I never 'told you not to' do anything . . . ;-)
PRICELESS.. beneath the thorns you can be really sweet eh?
lol.. i dunno if a dedication on this blog is a good thing or not :)
anyway, i'll take it positively.. but I wonder when will you start a post with a dedication? i guess that's too easy though.
& ROSH.. well well.. i remember the day al khaleej and gulf news doubled to 2DHS.. it was a big shock i tell you.. i mean it wasn't like a 10% or 20% increase.. it was right out 100%.. hmmm
you stomach these things eventually, but why do soft drinks stay low i dunno.. maybe making them is cheaper? btw, remember back in the days we had to recycle the bottles for pepsi? now of course no one gives a monkey.. so why did we recycle back then? coz glass was so expensive.. nothing to do with the environment at all.. just pure greed or economic common sense.
i noticed laban up has stayed at 50fils.. man.. i used to love that stuff at school.. and mana2eesh..
i still do.
ROSH.. what's ur fav shj school food? :)
hmmm Laban up - yum yum! damn I'd give anything to get my hands on one!
BuJ, I attended St Mary's & Indian High - we had lousy cafeteria food :(
It wasn't just KT & GN - but also Young Times and Junior News, who hiked up the prices. I was a proud memeber of the Otto fan club ;)
"UAEvirgin" - looooooooooooooool!!
'as backward as you presume me to be'
What the .... I'm totally flabbergasted ... Whatever gave you this impression?
'UAE virgin' Is this phrase copyrighted? Can I use this once in a bit?
Laban!
You have to try this Buj... try to have a laban right after Taraweeh during Ramadhan!
I can tell you it is the SWEETEST feeling! It really refreshes and I actually look forward to Taraweeh because of it hehe :P
ROSH.. loool.. i didn't ask for the school name.. man that gives WAY too much detail.. if u know what i mean :)
I think i've seen our school bus race your school bus many a time.. mind you.. you guys always won coz we had only 2 busses (everyone else had 4x4 etc) and you guys owned half the road!
I remember the OTTO fan club :-)
wasn't a member but damn.. i remember reading the young times etc!
UAEVIRGIN>> LOL.. love the term! maybe start uaevirgin.blogspot.com ?
AL REPUBLICAN.. thanks for that.. btw i like tarawee7 and laban up.. will try it next time i'm in town.. actually need to time it.
btw, have u tried laban ayran? it's by the chtoura bros.. it's amaaaazing.. a bit more expensive but really good.. the whole thing will not cost u more than 1dhs but it's more than 50fils some will say hehehe
lovely.. esp the lemony tangy feeling!
*paraglider, I take your words very seriously, and they don't do me any harm. Now accept this accolade gracefully! ;)
*buj, you'll find many thorns amongst roses, and many roses amongst thorns. Sorry for the cheesy response, it just *had* to be done! lol ;))
*buj/rosh so you guys must have noticed that although the price of soft drinks has remained unchanged, the price of "karaak" has gone up by about 25 fils per cup, approx...so my guess that they want everybody addicted to soft drinks by keeping the same price is wrong. FYI they *have* stopped selling the regular 330ml cans at Emarat petrol stations, and only 500ml bottles are available, priced at Dhs. 2. I have no explanation for this...what says you both...in economic terms...? Any observations?
OH yah lol the price of those croissants and crisps etc that we had at break-time hasn't changed at all! They just taste different as we get older and fatter!
*j-t, I was teasing, darling. Mocking myself and you :P Go ahead, use the term, but you didn't get it from *me*! (!!)
*al republican, as a "sweet" gesture, I suggest we sweeten up those labourers who keep writing into SDs blog with a bit of free laban.
I wish you'd start a blog too...! Will my dreams ever be fulfilled in this regard, I wonder...:P
Now even Laban-Up has become 75 fils almost universally. :-(
