Just another complaint...
Everybody's complaining and I feel compelled to counter-complain.
The rant starts here:
Salik - OK. If you don't have the money, keep complaining.
Traffic - OK. If you don't like cars, buy a yacht. Or a jumbo, and a couple of horses.
Lack of open beach - Get a membership or take a hike in the local park. Or pack some sand into your doggie-bags when you go to the desert and plant it on your balcony with a blow-it-up kids' pool. Hey presto, you got your own little beach in your back yard.
Local customs - If you don't like it, leave (thanks!)
Your job - It's a free world, you signed the contract
Smoking bans - Get a life or a muzzle. Available in local pet shops.
Racism - Stay at home and paint your face to the desired colour
Blacked out windows - Wish you had a 4wd? Sports car? Can't afford one?
Rent - If you can't afford to buy or rent, apply to your local labour camp. They have affordable housing and free food.
Your neighbour - If you don't like them, well, tell them! You chose your own neighbourhood...
Your rights - You have many. If you don't like it, leave! (thanks!)
Your husband - Why did you marry him?
Your bank account - Make some money, for goodness' sake, and stop complaining!

That's it i*maginate vent it all out. I do the same. Today everybody wants instant solutions to every goddamn issue and if they don't get it – it’s mostly about "let’s keep crying/sulking till kingdom come attitude".
Besides the rent issue, I say people, live with it, go with the flow, and learn to search/create/develop for alternatives/solutions - it's all there. Just need to lose the tunnel vision and stop being so spoiled - it's Dubai's fault, it spoils people. It spoiled me rotten and living NYC I learnt to accept the real deals & learnt to have alternatives. Now I appreciate all the good/bad from Dubai so much more.

Your lack of compassion for those less fortuate than you is nauseating. The fact that you seem to be proud of it is just plain sad. Get a life.
Yes, it's only a blog, but - if you're a writer, it does no harm to try to empathise, if only for a while, with those whom you'd rather lampoon. Why? Because lampooning is easy and will raise a cheap laugh from your 'immediate' community. But empathy is risky - you could lose hundreds of shallow friends and still get it wrong with your 'target'. You could even get it right, and find yourself darling'd by undesirables. It's your choice, but don't sell yourself upstream, at least not until the honorable tradition of selling yourself down the river is exhausted.

I've been reading a smoking post on the UAE community blog where people do clearly get really irritated by smoke. It irritates me too, but not more than the amount that people complain about *everything* in this place! Complain, complain, complain!

*rosh - I couldn't have put it in better words. You got my meaning in this post. It's not really about the specifics I included in the post, it's about the constant moaning and whining. I haven't heard so much of it in any other country in my life - certainly not non-muslim ones. That says it all.

*anon - the frustration in this post has nothing to do with compassion. it's frustration at those with NO compassion towards the UAE, several of whose blogs you will readily find on the UAE Community blog. And I have no space in my heart for those kinds of people, of which I am sure you are not.

My friend, I have no real preferences when it comes to being north or south of the river. I find friends in those who think without malice towards the UAE, be they virtual or real. I call for those with malicious/defeatist/racist views towards the UAE to show some empathy for the land in which they have chosen to live in. Simple.
I have no enemies either - they are also welcome to visit my blog and I'm pleased to have them as an audience.
How's Q by the way? Do people complain as much there as they do here...? Would be interesting to know!
To bitch, whine & complain is good. What the frig hell is a collective voice but not to moan, bitch, whine & complain? We do that here in the States all the time & I tell you, it makes a friggin difference. And why the hell not, the US is a democracy where they better listen to a collective voice if they want to hang on to their power seats.

i am shocked. i came to this blog from secret dubai diary thinking "you know what, the UAE and its gov't have some faults but its true, if you don't like it leave" the truth is this city cannot survive without the expatriate community. you are a shallow girl with no understanding of the struggles of life. I am Arab and very proud. I am extremely disgusted by the west and I'm very outspoken about it. However, I will always admit to the faults of Arabs. You, as an Emirati should realize that such comments make your people look bad. Can you explain why so many Emiratis miss job interviews because of one reason or another? If you want expats to leave, build your own hospitals, make first class universities ( not pathetic excuse for one like AUD- no offense but the library is smaller than my 2nd grade library with the same books), train your own doctors, engineers etc. I feel sorry for the Emiratis who actually have goals but are overshadowed by all the spoiled low class ruling few.
she will feel it if she is emirati, she is not. she is pakistani...and if you notice she will not reply to questions on her nationality. likes to play the card. born and brought up here, nowhere else to go, so defends it better than an emirati herself would.
