Navigating in "New Dubai"
It's quite hard to observe your surroundings whilst driving safely but even moreso in "New Dubai", as popularly labelled.
I recall the days when you could time your arrival to the Trade Centre Roundabout coming from Abu Dhabi by noticing the names of the shops on the right-hand side. Since the Metro construction has started, it's almost impossible to spot the shopnames.
I wonder is this is good for advertising, or bad? On the one hand, we'll have a full Metro, but on the other hand, there's always going to be car-owners that will not opt for the Metro, and the shopnames will be forgotten by them.
Personally, I now use the Burj Dubai to navigate my distance to the Trade Centre Roundabout, although it can be difficult on foggy days.

i just go by interchanges and hotels....
I never remember the numbers of the interchanges :P
I go by the bars - Red Lion (Metropolitan), Long's Bar (Towers Rotana, don't like it), Harvester (Crowne Plaza), Scowlits (Emirates Towers), They're quite well spaced for a leisurely walk, if they would just provide a few more road crossings. Last time I walked from Red Lion to Paranormal, crossing roads took more time than the walk itself.
That's interesting! mars goes by the interchanges, you go by the bars, and I go by the shops!

Apparently road signs in "New Dubai" aren't used for navigation!
ha ha ha... interesting.... using shops as milestones.
Frankly, like mars, I have always used the interchanges as markers!!

Btw paraglider, never heard of the monuments as described, only Long's.
Heard of some "Belgian" place in Festival City. It's worth a visit with good company. Good crowd, a place for you to check out.
LOL!
I'm just as bad. When people say street names to me I look blankly and immediatly elicit the response HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN ABUDHABI?
I mean HELLLOOOOO! People can be so clueless, why dont they know which supermarket, or shop is near their home. FOr gods sake arent they living there.
I remember the first time I had to drive to Mussafah to the school, and I had my fatima supermarket roundabout, my fire brigade roundabout ,past a funny looking building (I SWEAR) type of directions. Then they revamped Mussafah and I got lost... OH GOD!! I asked someone where I was, and the bastard say OH MADAM( nod nod) you are going to AL AIN!!!
I almost burst into tears. But as luck would have it, I somehome wound up close to where I had to go.
Did it teach me a lesson?
HECK NO!!
Wait till I give you directions to my home. HAHAHAHHAHAHA!
