In the country

Be truthful: how many countries can you name off the top of your head? I read this heading of a Gulf News article, saying 3.11m expats from 202 countries make up the workforce! 202 countries? A huge number!

My own results are posted @ the very bottom of this post, for your information

This is kind of a test. Don't read my 'results' unless you want to see your own first. Here's what you do: jot down as many countries of the world you can name, then compare your results with mine, if you must - letting me know how clever I am in the meanwhile. Come on - it's fun. Don't cheat. List in the order that appears first in your mind. No need to number. Just count your total at the end, and see if it matches the 202 countries Gulf News says makes up our expat workforce, and compare!

Do the test now. Add your results to the comments section.

My results follow, so shut your eyes until the deed is done!

Compare your results with the answers on wikipedia here

I put my head to the test and came up with 120 countries - *note to psychology enthusiasts, the order of the list is how my head worked at first impulse, and the end of the list is done by a 'reminder A-Z checklist', explaining why some country names, even though today significant in the political framework, appear at the end of my personal brainscope.

There are some I missed - embarrassingly - this teaches me some lessons. I love my world map - I'd better go find it again.

Your results - show 'em, please!

how can the UAe have labor forces from 202 countries when wikipedia lists a maximum of 193?
*shakes head in disbelief*

Nick babe - you mean Trinidad & Tobago?

Mars .. wikipedia info is not necessarily correct because anybody can compile pages on it - at least that was the last I heard, and their policy might have changed for reasons I can't be bothered to explain = look up wiki if they have a page on it :P

blah blah directly in resp to your point: which is why I did this exercise. Am obviously off the mark - but how many people from Honduras or Montenegro live in Dubai?

Anyone from Montenegro reading this blog, come forward, for I would love to visit your country for a nice holiday this summer!

I think UN has 192 members.

I can recognise many countries if I were given some choices.. However, to name countries from scratch, I would struggle to get past 50 me thinks.

looooool it looks harder than it is I guess but I can't believe how many countries I missed

Darn? people from 202 nations live in the UAE? Honestly me don't think so - can't be true, can it?

i*maginate said...

Well, rosh, the personal test does show a lot. If ppl from 202 countries make up the labour force and say...my knowledge is 'average', I must say, I have never met anyone in the UAE who holds nationalities from Honduras, Macedonia, Serbia, Botswana, Montenegro, Sierra Leone or Cambodia!

You cheated :) wrote twice Lithiania (Lithuania) and Lithouania :)

I did indeed! My, you must have sore eyes by now: I sure have after re-checking! Must have been a typo, or maybe it is some kind of mystic sign:P
